THE PRINCIPLE

How it works

Fluid-management systems deliver irrigation and, in some configurations, coordinate outflow or suction. Their control method and intended application differ. Arthroscopy, hysteroscopy and other endoscopic procedures should not be assumed to use interchangeable pumps or settings.

Distinguish delivery from measurement

A pump’s display may represent a calculated or measured quantity. Gravity-equivalent and joint-calibrated designs use different approaches, so identical displayed settings need not mean identical surgical-site pressures.

Check how outflow is coordinated

Suction, instruments and tubing affect the working conditions. Some systems coordinate pump behaviour with resection devices. Confirm the exact compatible combination.

Match the pump to its intended application

Arthroscopy, hysteroscopy and other irrigation applications have different monitoring needs. Do not transfer settings between platforms; ask about fluid tracking, alarms and procedure-specific training.
