THE PRINCIPLE

How it works

Ultrasonic surgical instruments convert electrical power into rapid mechanical vibration at the blade. This can support cutting and coagulation. HARMONIC is a branded ultrasonic product family, not the name of every ultrasonic instrument.

01

Follow the energy conversion

A piezoelectric transducer converts electrical input into mechanical motion. That vibration travels along the instrument to the blade, where tissue contact produces the cutting and coagulation effect.

02

Treat the instrument as a system

Generator control, transducer, blade and tissue load interact. Vessel-sealing limits, shaft dimensions and compatible generators are specific to the selected instrument.

03

Mechanical does not mean cold

Ultrasonic activation can heat the instrument and adjacent tissue. Residual heat and safe handling remain important. HARMONIC is a manufacturer’s product family, not a generic specification for all ultrasonic devices.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

Ask the right questions.

Assess the exact scope, camera, processor, accessories and service package you will receive. A demonstration should use that configuration.

  • Approved uses and vessel-sealing limits for the exact instrument.
  • Blade geometry, shaft length and access requirements.
  • Thermal behaviour, activation controls and training.
  • Generator compatibility, single-use requirements and per-case cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is ultrasonic energy the same as electrosurgery?

No. Ultrasonic instruments create mechanical vibration; electrosurgery uses high-frequency current to produce tissue effects.

Can the blade remain hot after activation?

Yes. Follow the device’s precautions concerning residual heat and contact with surrounding tissue.

Does this page mean UnivLabs supplies HARMONIC?

No. This is a technology explanation. Confirm the brand and model included in any proposed surgical suite.
